The humpback whale migration passing Sydney takes place between April and December each year. The season is split into two distinct sections depending on the direction of travel of the majority of whales at that time.
The migrating population is named the Group 5 Southern Hemisphere humpback whale population or the Australian East coast humpbacks. As distinct from other humpback migration populations that travel along the West Australian and South African coasts.
The distance from the coast of the whales is believed to be based on the movements of the ocean currents, primarily the East Australian Current. The East Australian Current is a strong southerly current that the humpback whales make use of during their southern migration. On the Northern migration the Humpback whales will often use the Inshore Northern current, which is a north flowing counter current to the EAC. The main purpose of the annual humpback migration is to breed.

In 2015 a team of explorers, photographers and scientists sailed through the High Arctic of Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland to document their unique environments. Together they created Elysium Arctic, a series of artworks capturing the icons of the polar north – majestic icebergs and glaciers, playful wildlife and stunning views of land and sea. Elysium Arctic also records the devastating impact of climate change in the earth's northernmost regions.
The Elysium projects are run by Michael Aw, internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer, explorer and conservationist. Michael believes that art can inspire people to take action against climate change and save some of the most vulnerable places on earth.Braving sub-zero temperatures, sea ice and some very curious polar bears, the Elysium team has produced a breathtaking visual journey through the Arctic. Join them on their journey as you wander along the Darling Harbour foreshore – then pop into the museum to learn more about our Arctic region.
The grand dame of world theatre, Dame Edna Everage, has been forced out of retirement by the demands of her adoring “Precious Possums”, announcing a surprise tour of Australia in September and October.
In a letter to her fans, Dame Edna apologised for upsetting them when she announced her retirement from public life, blaming her manager, “failed actor and attention seeker” Barry Humphries.
While every star had to make allowances for minor acts of embezzlement, she said, Humphries had his hand in the till up to his armpit.
“My new team of advisors said I should close down all my companies, even my charitable foundation Friends of the Prostate, and re-start my career on a clean page,” Dame Edna said.
“That's what I'm doing. That explains my so-called ‘retirement’ and withdrawal from public life. Now I'm reborn, fit as a fiddle, and rid of the leech who tormented me for so long. So, Possums, please do come and say hello to me. It would be lovely to see your faces again.”
Since she first appeared on stage as purple-rinsed Melbourne housewife Mrs Edna Everage, Dame Edna has toured Europe, the US and the Middle East, picking up a Tony Award for the 2000 Broadway production Dame Edna, The Royal Tour and a Tony nomination in 2004 for Back with a Vengeance.
Tickets to Dame Edna My Gorgeous Life national tour go on sale to the general public at 9am on Thursday 9 May.
Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road global tour has already been hailed as one of his most “energetic, dazzlingly-original and joyful celebrations”. Elton’s legendary catalogue, including beloved songs ‘Bennie and the Jets’, ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Tiny Dancer’, ‘Crocodile Rock’, ‘Philadelphia Freedom’ and more, are showcased in a musical masterpiece that is a “reflective and stunning tribute to a great artist’s career” (NME), also celebrating his 50-plus year collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin - one of the great song-writing partnerships of all time.
Audiences will experience a rare glimpse into Elton’s life, and the deeply personal meaning behind some of his greatest hits, via mesmerising, never-before-seen images and videos displayed throughout the show from his incredible 50-year career. Complete with brand new stage production, and tour wardrobe designed by Italian fashion house Gucci, Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road global tour is intimate and personal, while also spectacular and daring.
More than a concert; an unforgettable memory, Elton John’s curtain call will be the last chance to catch this legendary performer touring in Australia.
The soaring success of the film Bohemian Rhapsody, the highest grossing music biopic of all time, has proven that the love for Queen remains as strong as ever.

Completing the tour line-up are long-term collaborator Spike Edney on keyboards, Neil Fairclough on bass, and Tyler Warren on percussion.

Made from abandoned fishing nets and recycled plastics, these ghost nets are colourful woven sculptures featuring an outrigger canoe, fish, turtles, squid and jellyfish.
These works show peoples connections to the sea and inspire awareness of ocean pollution, recycling and promote conservation of the marine environment.
A seemingly harmless piece of discarded fishing net, left to drift in the ocean can strangle a sea turtle travelling to its nesting ground. Sharks, fish and other marine life all over the world have also suffered similar fates through entanglement in fishing nets.

Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour are the proud owners of two bee hives which will provide honey for our guests as well as serving to pollenate nearby plants in the region.
Joshua Bounday, our assistant front office manager, was largely responsible for realising the vision of getting bee hives at the Hotel, with his extensive background and knowledge as an apiarist lending his services to ensure that this dream realised.
Housing and harvesting honey from beehives is part of AccorHotels Planet 21, an initiative where a compromise is struck between providing travellers a comfortable and convenient stay whilst implementing methods and processes to reduce our carbon footprint and movement towards a sustainable and responsible company such as low flow toilets, eco-designed beds, eco-certified soaps and cleaning products, sustainable foods with an emphasis on locally grown produce and a greater commitment to recycling.
It is anticipated that future harvests will provide enough honey to use as guest amenities with surplus honey to be used in The Ternary restaurant as an inclusion in the buffet breakfast.

Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour is currently displaying an original artwork by a talented indigenous artist, Jacob Toomey called 'The Gathering Place'
The piece was commissioned by the Hotel in acknowledgement of our local Gadigal community as the original custodians of the land upon which the Hotel sits. We thank Jacob for sharing his talent and welcome all to come view the piece in the Hotel.
“The Gathering Place” aims to capture the journey taken by many across the numerous oceans and seas of the world. A journey which leads them to this land, traditional Gadigal land of Sydney where the hotel sits.
The centre piece portrays the area of the Novotel and Sydney Harbour, and the places of origin spread across the canvas symbolised through the traditional circular symbols. Ultimately The Gathering Place has the goal of detailing the significance of travel and the beautiful land in which the Novotel thrives amongst.
